De internationale cannabiscultuur bloeit en blaakt van zelfvertrouwen. Dat bleek tijdens de vlekkeloos verlopen 25e editie van de High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. Verslag van de afsluitende Awards Ceremony in de Melkweg.
‘It’s been a long and hard-fought campaign, but we are winning around the world’
In true stoner style gingen de deuren van de Melkweg donderdag ruim een uur later dan aangekondigd open voor het hoogtepunt van de jaarlijkse Cannabis Cup: de Awards Ceremony. Gelukkig mocht er dit jaar gewoon gerookt worden in de Melkweg, wat bijdroeg aan de extreem relaxte sfeer. Zowel op het podium als in de zaal was het hugs and smiles all round.
Pioniers Wernard Bruining en Nol van Schaik kregen een Dutch Masters Award uitgereikt voor hun bijdrage aan de cannabis- en coffeeshopcultuur in Nederland.
Wernard, oprichter van de eerste coffeeshop van Amsterdam, de Mellow Yellow, droeg zijn prijs op aan Old Ed, de legendarische Californische kweker die begin jaren tachtig een cruciale schakel vormde tussen de Californische kwekers-scene en Nederland. Nol vertelde het publiek dat de wietpas deze week de definitieve doodsteek heeft gekregen.
Het VOC kijkt terug op een succesvolle en gezellige Cannabis Cup, waar nieuwe contacten zijn gelegd en oude aangehaald en waar we zelfs wat fondsen hebben kunnen werven.
Felicitaties aan alle winnaars en dank aan de vrienden van het Cannabis College die ons vijf dagen lang onderdak verschaften in hun stand en aan de Temple Dragon Crew van High Times voor hun gastvrijheid.

“The prohibition of cannabis is the original conspiracy story, for how else was the most beneficial plant under the sun -a plant providing clothing, paper, fuel, food and medicine- so demonized that billions of dollars have been squandered in a failed campaign to eradicate it off the face of the earth?
It saddens me when I think of the millions who suffered needlessly over the last 80 years, many thrown into cages, separated from their families with their lives destroyed. Hopefully, this madness will soon end. I’m happy to report there’s a lot more cannabis being grown today than when the U.S. Treasury Deoartment launched reefer madness.
Meanwhile, by the time you read this, one to three states in the United States will have voted on complete legalization, while many others are poised to join seventeen other states in instituting medical marijuana protections, despite the federal prohibition.
It’s been a long and hard-fought campaign, but we are winning around the world, even if the Dutch are strangely moving in the opposite direction. Rest assured there will always be a Cannabis Cup.”
