Annemiek van Bolhuis, de Nederlandse drugscoördinator, heeft een werkbezoek gebracht aan de VS. Ze voerde overleg met haar Amerikaanse collega en sprak op de Nederlandse ambassade in Washington met drie grote organisaties die pleiten voor decriminalisering van cannabis. Onder hen Allen St. Pierre, directeur van NORML.

Ook vertegenwoordigers van de Drug Policy Alliance en het Marjiuana Policy Project deden mee aan het gesprek. In een kort verslag schrijft Allen St. Pierre aan VOC-er Freek Polak:

‘Dr. van Bolhuis was quite nice, she indicated a basic support for coffeeshops (…) She also indicated that she’d just met with the US’ drug czar, and that he was a far cry from Walters (acknowledging Walters extreme anti-drug and cultural bias). She also had a working knowledge of the exploding medical cannabis distribution in states like California and Colorado; that the per capita number of these dispensaries were higher than schools, Starbucks, etc…’

‘All in all it was a quite positive meeting, with her acknowledging the irony that while the Dutch debate over coffeeshops is not entirely settled, but the growing acceptance of cannabis in the US, especially for ‘medical’ purposes, does seem to be. She was going off to the west coast for more junkets, and I think to tour some medical cannabis facilities.’

St. Pierre besluit zijn verslag met een nieuwjaarswens:

‘Let’s hope that logic and commonsense continue to largely prevail in the Netherlands on its pragmatic cannabis policies.’

En nu maar hopen dat van Bolhuis de opgedane ervaringen en inzichten over weet te brengen aan haar minister Ab Klink…
